1995 Tour de France

Briley brothers

James, Linwood, and Anthony Briley murdered 11 people across Richmond, Virginia, between 1971 and 1979 — then escaped from death row together in 1984, prompting a six-state manhunt that ended in Philadelphia six days later.

Dwight York

Dwight York built a full-scale Egyptian pyramid on a Georgia compound, declared himself an extraterrestrial, and was convicted in 2004 of molesting over 100 children — some as young as four years old.

Tilikum (orca)

Tilikum, captured off Iceland at age two in 1983, killed three people across two marine parks over 21 years. SeaWorld used him as its primary breeding bull anyway — he fathered 21 of the park's captive orcas.

Operation Gibraltar

In 1965 Pakistan infiltrated 30,000 fighters into Kashmir under Operation Gibraltar, dressed as locals. The Kashmiris, meant to rise in welcome, reported the strangers to Indian authorities instead. The operation collapsed in weeks.

Gas mantle

Before electricity, a mesh sock soaked in radioactive thorium dioxide burned inside every middle-class parlour lamp. The mantles crumbled to radioactive dust when touched. Millions were sold; none came with warnings.

Liu Ziye

Liu Ziye forced his own aunts into his imperial harem, declared them imperial concubines, then was stabbed to death by a palace servant at sixteen — his ministers had arranged the blade.
