China's last Ming emperor hacked off his own daughter's arm before hanging himself from a tree on Coal Hill — 1644, alone, his dynasty already ash beneath him.

Emperor Chongde

When Qing founding emperor Hong Taiji died, his favourite consort Consort Zhuang was buried alive with him — and his son Chongde reportedly wept himself into a fatal illness within months.

Liu Ziye

Liu Ziye forced his own aunts into his imperial harem, declared them imperial concubines, then was stabbed to death by a palace servant at sixteen — his ministers had arranged the blade.

Swallowing Gold (suicide method)

Gold swallowed as a suicide method killed several Chinese emperors; modern pathologists still debate the mechanism — internal laceration, toxicity, or obstruction — and no consensus exists.

Emperor Zhi of Han

Nine-year-old Emperor Zhi told the warlord Liang Ji — to his face — 'You are a tyrannical lord.' Liang Ji poisoned the boy inside a rice cake shortly after.

Emperor Xian reigned for thirty-one years as Cao Cao's hostage. He watched Cao Cao personally drag Empress Fu from her chambers and execute her inside the palace walls in 214 CE.

Emperor Shaodi of Han

Emperor Shaodi threatened to murder the empress dowager who had poisoned his mother. She deposed him first — he was ten — then had him caged and reportedly liquor-drowned.

Liu He holds history's fastest deposition: 27 days as Han emperor, removed for exactly 1,127 documented offenses — an average of 41 violations per day, per the official record.

Taichang Emperor

The Taichang Emperor reigned 29 days before dying — reportedly after swallowing red pills supplied by a court official named Li Kezhuo, whose formula was never fully disclosed.

Emperor Ming of Liu Song murdered at least twelve of his own brothers before taking the throne, then died at thirty-four — his body reportedly destroyed by the sexual excesses he used as celebration.
