Battle of Karánsebes

In 1788, the Austrian army panicked, mistook its own soldiers for Ottoman troops, and fought itself through the night — 10,000 dead, zero enemies. The Ottomans arrived the next day to claim an empty, blood-soaked field.

Battle of Chancellorsville

Lee's most brilliant tactical victory was also the shot that doomed the Confederacy: returning from a night reconnaissance, Stonewall Jackson was fired upon by his own men and died eight days later.

Battle of the Crater

Union engineers dug 511 feet of tunnel, packed it with 8,000 pounds of powder, and blew a perfect 170-foot crater in Confederate lines — then sent infantry into the hole, where they were slaughtered like livestock in a pit.

Sicilian Expedition

Athens voted in 415 BC to conquer Sicily — 38,000 men, 200 ships — based on flawed intelligence and civilian fever. Every ship and every soldier was lost; the expedition ended the Athenian Empire.

Mongol invasions of Japan

Kublai Khan's fleets were wrecked twice — in 1274 and again in 1281 — by typhoons striking the same Japanese coastline. The Japanese named the storms kamikaze: divine wind.

Fall of Singapore

Britain's 'impregnable' Singapore fortress had fifteen-inch coastal guns pointed permanently seaward. Japan's 30,000 troops arrived on bicycles from the Malayan jungle to the north and accepted the surrender of 80,000 Allied soldiers.

Battle of Isandlwana

At Isandlwana, January 1879, 1,300 British regulars were annihilated by a Zulu force of 20,000 — partly because a quartermaster refused to issue reserve ammunition without the proper paperwork.

Battle of the Little Bighorn

Custer split his 700-man 7th Cavalry into three columns at Little Bighorn, then led 210 men in a direct charge against a Lakota-Cheyenne encampment later estimated at 1,500–2,000 warriors. Not one of his column survived.

Invasion of Russia (1941)

With German panzers within 19 miles of Moscow in December 1941, Hitler diverted Army Group Center south toward Ukraine. When the order reversed, the temperature had dropped to −30°C and the moment was gone forever.

Battle of Adwa

Italy invaded Ethiopia in 1895 with 17,700 troops marching in four columns so widely separated they could not support each other. The Ethiopian Emperor Menelik II annihilated them at Adwa with 100,000 soldiers — ending European colonialism's air of invincibility.
