South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission granted amnesty to torturers who confessed on live television — perpetrators named their victims, described exact methods, then walked free while families watched from the gallery.

Tiryns

Operation Gibraltar

In 1965 Pakistan infiltrated 30,000 fighters into Kashmir under Operation Gibraltar, dressed as locals. The Kashmiris, meant to rise in welcome, reported the strangers to Indian authorities instead. The operation collapsed in weeks.

After seatbelt laws passed, Sam Peltzman measured the data: drivers sped up and followed closer, killing roughly the same number of car occupants — but significantly more pedestrians and cyclists.

Ransom Room

Atahualpa filled a 22-foot room once with gold and twice with silver to purchase his freedom. Pizarro accepted the metal, pocketed the treasure, then had the Inca emperor strangled anyway in 1533.
