Herzog boiled and ate his own shoe — with garlic and duck fat — after Errol Morris finished a film Herzog bet he never would. The documentary of the meal runs 28 minutes. He called the shoe "quite acceptable."

Black Sox Scandal

Eight Chicago White Sox players threw the 1919 World Series for gamblers paying as little as $5,000 per player. A boy reportedly pleaded, 'Say it ain't so, Joe.' Shoeless Joe Jackson batted .375 during the fix.

Dik-dik

The dik-dik marks territory by pressing a preorbital gland — located millimetres from its eyeball — directly onto twigs, essentially staking claim with its own face, one poke at a time.

Mary (elephant)

A five-ton circus elephant named Mary was hanged by a crane in Erwin, Tennessee, 1916 — the first chain snapped under her weight. She had killed her trainer the day before. A town decided justice required a railroad derrick.

White genocide conspiracy theory

A claim of white genocide in South Africa — built on disputed murder statistics from Afrikaner advocacy sites — migrated from Boer forums to Brenton Tarrant's manifesto, cited by name before the Christchurch massacre.

Jonestown

Jim Jones called it 'Revolutionary Suicide.' In a Guyanese jungle on November 18, 1978, 918 people died — 304 of them children — drinking cyanide-laced punch. The vats were prepared in advance.

Shoko Asahara

Before releasing sarin on the Tokyo subway in 1995, Shoko Asahara sold his bathwater to followers for $800 a cup. He convinced a physician to murder members who tried to leave. He was hanged in 2018.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl

Developers photographed the actual Chernobyl Exclusion Zone to build every rusted corridor and overgrown courtyard — a ghost city recreated pixel by pixel, where a 30-kilometer real-world dead zone becomes a place of eerie, almost sacred stillness.
