Tombstone gunfighter Buckskin Frank Leslie used live ammunition to trace his wife May's silhouette on their cabin wall, bullet by bullet. He later shot her dead; the bullet-portrait remained on the wall.

Berserker

Norse berserkers bit their shields and charged wearing bear pelts, impervious to iron. Saga accounts describe them foaming at the mouth; one killed 11 men before being pinned to the earth with a pitchfork.

Horst Mahler

Sejanus ran the Roman Empire as Tiberius's viceroy for a decade — then a single letter from the emperor, read aloud in the Senate, ended it. The Roman crowd tore his body apart in the street before nightfall.

By November 1923, a loaf of bread in Berlin cost 200 billion marks. Workers demanded to be paid hourly so they could sprint to buy food before the next price update.

Zola's open letter, published across the front page of L'Aurore on 13 January 1898, named eleven army and government officials by name. The editor printed 300,000 copies; Paris sold out before noon.

Hajduk

Hajduks were hunted outlaws turned folk saints — men who fled Ottoman tax collectors into the mountains and were later immortalized in epic verse. The same raid that burned a village made a ballad by spring.

Battle of Solferino

Swiss banker Henry Dunant arrived at Solferino the morning after battle and found 40,000 wounded and dead rotting in one field, untended. He spent three days organizing local women to bandage men from both sides. He invented the Red Cross.

Titus

Titus, who destroyed Jerusalem's Temple in 70 AD, wept on any evening he'd performed no act of generosity, reportedly saying, 'Friends, I have lost a day.' He reigned only two years before dying at 41.
