Rogelio Roxas claimed to have found General Yamashita's buried hoard and showed a golden Buddha to prove it; he was then arrested, tortured, and died in custody. The gold has never appeared.

Ortolan bunting

Albert Fish

Albert Fish mailed Grace Budd's mother a letter explaining, in clinical detail, how he butchered and ate her ten-year-old daughter over nine days in 1928. He was 58 when he abducted her; he called human buttocks 'the best part.'

White genocide conspiracy theory

A claim of white genocide in South Africa — built on disputed murder statistics from Afrikaner advocacy sites — migrated from Boer forums to Brenton Tarrant's manifesto, cited by name before the Christchurch massacre.

Paul Castellano

Paul Castellano was shot six times outside Sparks Steak House on December 16, 1985, while John Gotti watched from a car across the street — Castellano's dinner order was still waiting at the host stand.

Gelert

Welsh prince Llywelyn killed his hound Gelert for apparently savaging his infant son — then found the baby unharmed, a dead wolf beneath the cradle. He never smiled again. The grave at Beddgelert still draws visitors.
