Ninja Gaiden II

Limbless enemies drag themselves across the floor on their chins to bite the player. Ninja Gaiden II's 2008 combat generates severed-limb piles no other game has matched. The genre called it ultraviolence; reviewers called it art.

Decebalus

The last Dacian king slit his own throat on horseback as Roman cavalry reached him — the moment was carved in stone on Trajan's Column, his severed head then paraded to Rome.

Ryugyong Hotel

North Korea's 105-story pyramid hotel has been under construction since 1987, was capped in 1992, and has never hosted a single guest — its empty windows visible from Pyongyang for 30 years like a concrete tombstone.

Risk compensation

After seatbelt laws passed, Sam Peltzman measured the data: drivers sped up and followed closer, killing roughly the same number of car occupants — but significantly more pedestrians and cyclists.

Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging

AWB leader Eugène Terre'Blanche drove armoured cars through the glass doors of the Bophuthatswana parliament building in March 1994, attempting to prop up a dying bantustan. Three of his men were shot dead roadside, on camera.

Aldrich Ames

Aldrich Ames ran the CIA's Soviet counterintelligence division while methodically selling its agent roster to Moscow. Within a year of his first data dump in 1985, at least ten CIA assets inside the Soviet Union were executed.

Basil II

He blinded 15,000 Bulgarian prisoners and sent them home in columns of a hundred, each led by one man with a single eye. Tsar Samuel collapsed and died of shock two days later.

Wilkie Collins

Wilkie Collins drank laudanum by the tumbler — eventually enough to kill several men — and dictated two complete novels in states he later had no memory of. His housekeeper measured the doses. The manuscripts survived him.
