J'Accuse...!

Zola's open letter, published across the front page of L'Aurore on 13 January 1898, named eleven army and government officials by name. The editor printed 300,000 copies; Paris sold out before noon.

Fall of Constantinople

Constantine XI, last emperor of Rome's 1,100-year line, tore off his imperial insignia and charged into the Ottoman breach on foot. His body was never identified. A city that had stood since 330 AD died with him.

Baruch Spinoza

At 23, Spinoza received the harshest cherem—formal excommunication—in Amsterdam's Jewish community. The writ called his 'abominable heresies' and 'monstrous deeds' unspecified, and they remain unspecified to this day.

Taichang Emperor

The Taichang Emperor reigned 29 days before dying — reportedly after swallowing red pills supplied by a court official named Li Kezhuo, whose formula was never fully disclosed.

Sejanus

Sejanus ran the Roman Empire as Tiberius's viceroy for a decade — then a single letter from the emperor, read aloud in the Senate, ended it. The Roman crowd tore his body apart in the street before nightfall.
