Eugene de Kock commanded Vlakplaas, a death squad that killed, dismembered, and barbecued victims' remains to destroy evidence — his own men called him 'Prime Evil' before prosecutors did.

Ems dispatch

Bismarck received a routine diplomatic telegram in 1870, redacted it to read as a deliberate insult, and released it to the press. France declared war within days, and the German Empire was born from the fallout.

Taichang Emperor

The Taichang Emperor reigned 29 days before dying — reportedly after swallowing red pills supplied by a court official named Li Kezhuo, whose formula was never fully disclosed.

Pykrete

Pykrete — 14% sawdust locked in ice — stopped bullets in tests and barely melted. Project Habbakuk planned a 2-million-ton aircraft carrier made of it; a scale model was demonstrated to Churchill in a Quebec hotel bathtub.

Iamblichus

He rose ten cubits off the ground — glowing gold — while his students watched twice. A Syrian Neoplatonist who made ritual magic philosophically respectable. What do you do with a man who keeps floating?

Idi Amin

Idi Amin awarded himself the Conqueror of the British Empire medal, the Victoria Cross, and a 'Last King of Scotland' title — all self-issued — while between 100,000 and 500,000 Ugandans died under his rule.

Panic of 1907

In October 1907, J.P. Morgan physically locked the nation's top bankers inside his Manhattan library at midnight and refused to open the doors until they signed a $25 million rescue pledge at 4:45 a.m.

Crypteia

Spartan boys earned citizenship by stalking and murdering helot slaves at night, alone, with a knife. The state called it education. The helots called it nothing — they left no record.

East Coast–West Coast hip-hop rivalry

By 1997, two of rap's biggest figures were dead and their labels were in ruin. What began as promotional rivalry between Death Row and Bad Boy became geography that determined whose side you were on at gunpoint.
