Rohan Hours

In the Rohan Hours, painted around 1420, a skeletal dying man lies naked on bare ground while God leans down from the sky to address him directly — a private conversation between a mortal and the divine, held across a page smaller than a hardback book.

Mappa mundi

Drawn on a single sheet of calfskin in 1300, the Hereford Mappa Mundi places Jerusalem at the geometric center of the known world, with Paradise at the top and sea monsters filling every ocean — a complete cosmology on 1.58 square metres of vellum.

Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry

Painted between 1412 and 1416 for the Duke of Berry, the February calendar page of the Très Riches Heures shows a peasant warming bare legs by a fire — the oldest surviving painted snow scene, accurate enough that meteorologists have studied it.

Wilton Diptych

Painted around 1395 for Richard II, the Wilton Diptych contains a tiny orb held by a painted angel — inside it, under magnification, a green island with a white castle appears: England, rendered smaller than a fingernail, seen as if from above the clouds.

Book of Kells

Created around 800 CE on the island of Iona, the Book of Kells contains 680 vellum pages in which no two decorated initials repeat — hidden faces, serpents, and cats nursing kittens emerge under magnification, invisible to the naked eye.

Sutton Hoo helmet

Buried in a Suffolk mound around 625 CE with a 27-metre ship and a king's full treasure, the Sutton Hoo helmet was found in 1939 in over 500 fragments — reconstructed, it still carries the pressed impression of a human face in its iron cheekplates.

Chalice of Doña Urraca

A Roman onyx cup, carved between the 1st century BCE and 1st century CE, was remounted in 11th-century Leonese gold and kept by queens of Spain for a thousand years — then, in 2014, two historians announced it as the likeliest surviving candidate for the Holy Grail.

Bayeux Tapestry

Embroidered in wool on linen 70 metres long, the Bayeux Tapestry was likely stitched within twenty years of the 1066 invasion it records — by English hands, for a Norman patron, depicting the death of a king the embroiderers may have watched fall.

Luttrell Psalter

Commissioned around 1320 for Sir Geoffrey Luttrell of Lincolnshire, the Luttrell Psalter fills its psalm margins with plowing serfs, acrobats, hybrid monsters, and a armored snail attacking a knight — 309 pages where medieval England's daily life sits beside its absurdist imagination.

Maestà (Duccio)

When Duccio's Maestà was carried from his workshop to Siena Cathedral on June 9, 1311, all shops in the city closed, bells rang, and the entire population walked in procession behind it — the largest panel painting of its age, at 5 metres wide, entering the city like a sovereign.
