Peregrine falcon

Common swift

The common swift lives its entire adult life in the air — sleeping, mating, and moulting on the wing — touching ground only to nest. It may fly two million kilometres in a lifetime without once choosing to land.

The swordfish heats its own eyes and brain to 28°C above the surrounding ocean, running a biological furnace to keep vision razor-sharp at depth and speed. It is a warm-eyed predator in a cold, dark sea.

The pronghorn runs at 55 mph with an endurance no living predator can match — because it evolved to outrun the American cheetah, extinct for 10,000 years. It is the fastest land animal on a continent that no longer threatens it.
